Response Paper 3

Response paper 3

Q Over the course of the semester you will be expected complete three short papers in response to a prompt. These response papers will combine information from class lecture and readings with your own opinions on important or difficult topics. These are not research topics, so no information outside of the material discussed in class lectures and covered in class readings is required, but an excellent paper will thoughtfully integrate both primary and secondary sources in response to the prompts. Arguments should be supported by specific details and should demonstrate that the student has read and engaged with the relevant primary and secondary sources. Successful papers will be clearly organized and structured with a thesis, supporting arguments, and a conclusion. Note that the prompts are a starting point to help you formulate your response. Do not merely provide short, wooden answers to the questions provided, but instead use them to guide your thought process as you prepare these papers. An ideal paper will paper both formulate a thesis as well as critique or evaluate other potential interpretations. Each paper is worth 5% of your grade (50 points each). To appropriately cover these topics each paper should be a minimum of 2 pages. Prompts for Response Paper 3 (Pick 1) 1) Women play a number of roles in biblical text and tradition. Analyze at least two representations of women in the biblical text in order to formulate a biblical perspective of women in society. Is the Bible consistent in its presentation, and is there room for multiple interpretations? What is the role of and what weight should be put on the historical and cultural context in which the authors were writing? 2) Discuss various biblical perspectives a difficult topic such as violence, war, or slavery. How might one reconcile those differences? How have various religions dealt with these passages? 3) How does the Bible deal with the problem of suffering? Is this satisfying? How is the biblical interpretation similar to or different from other treatments in the ancient world?

Two representations of women in the biblical text in order to formulate a biblical perspective of women in society The ways in which women in the Bible had not been allowed to come to the forefront openly and publicly is evident in most parts of the Bible. This is because of the ways in which treatment of women had been mostly different from the treatment shown towards men. The most difficult aspect had been to accept that women would be dominated in most aspects by men in the Bible. There had to be strict laws adhered to by women like sexual laws, marital laws, behavioral laws, societal laws, etc. The violations of any of these laws and other laws would be treated seriously and female violators would be punished severely. The severity of punishment had been more extreme during the Old Testament than in the New Testament, especially after the coming of Jesus Christ on Earth. The women during the time of the Bible had been supposed to be humble, modest and reserved as much as possible. This is because there had been prohibitions to be too open towards men by women. If any woman would be too much extroverted and talking freely like in the modern societies, that woman could be considered to be not of very good character. The subjugation of women could not be prevented during the time of the Bible. This is evident in Judges 19 in which there is the story of a raped concubine narrated by the author.
